Troubleshooting the Library's Web Site: Enabling the acs e-mail and online catalog links.

"When I click on the links to acs e-mail and online catalog, I get an error message? What can I do to fix this?"

At the top of every page on the Alumni Medical Library's Web site, just below the title bar, you will find a row of links to MEDLINE, acs e-mail, online catalog, ILL/photocopy and e-mail librarian. These links are the "quick action items" which allow fast and easy access to our BUMC MEDLINE Plus system, ACS e-mail, the BU libraries' online catalog, and other options.

Some library users have commented that the acs e-mail and online catalog links lead them to a dead end. If this happens on your computer, you'll need to go to the Preferences option and select a telnet protocol so the computer knows what application to employ when you click on the acs e-mail or online catalog links. Follow the directions below:

Netscape Communicator users:
  1. Click on the Edit option located at the top of the Netscape screen.
  2. Choose the Preferences option from the Edit menu.
  3. From the Preferences menu, click on the Applications option.
  4. You'll notice an alphabetic list of applications. Arrow down the list until you find the telnet option. (Please note that the telnet option may also be called URL: Telnet Protocol.)
  5. Select the telnet (URL: Telnet Protocol) option, and click on the Edit box, which is located to the right of the alphabetic list.
  6. An "Edit type" box will appear on your screen. From this box, click on the browse option.
  7. Open your C: drive and choose the telnet application that you want to use. (Please note that your computer may have one of several telnet options loaded. If you are unable to locate the telnet option on your computer, contact your department's computer specialist for assistance.)
  8. After you've found the appropriate telnet application on your machine, hilite it and click on open.
  9. After you've clicked on the open box, you'll be back at the "Edit type" menu box. From this box, click on OK.
  10. After clicking OK, you'll be back at the Preferences -- Applications menu. Click OK again to exit.

Netscape Gold users:

  1. Click on Options, which is located at the top of the Netscape screen.
  2. Choose General Preferences from the Options menu.
  3. Then, click on the Apps option.
  4. Click on the browse box, located next to the "Telnet Application" option.
  5. Open your C: drive and choose the telnet application that you want to use. (Please note that your computer may have one of several telnet options loaded. If you are unable to locate the telnet option on your computer, contact your department's computer specialist for assistance.)
  6. After you've found the appropriate telnet application on your machine, hilite it and click on open.
  7. Now you'll be back at the "Preferences" menu box. You'll notice that the "Telnet Application" option should reflect your selection. From this box, click on OK.
  8. After clicking OK, you'll be back at the Preferences -- Applications menu. Click OK again to exit.

If you still get an error message when you try the acs e-mail or online catalog options, you'll probably need to load the most current version of Netscape on your computer. Go to Netscape's Web site at www.netscape.com and follow the directions for downloading the current version of the Netscape software.
