Three Easy Ways to Request Interlibrary Loans or Photocopies

When you need a book, book chapter, journal article or other item, you can submit an interlibrary loan or photocopy request any of the following three ways:

  • Internet: Interlibrary loan and photocopy requests can be submitted on the Web at http://www.medlib.bu.edu/forms/illrequest.cfm. Simply fill-out the request form and click on the "submit" button.
  • Fax: Your request can be faxed to the ILL/photocopy department at 617-638-4233. Be sure that each faxed request includes your name, departmental address and phone number, and a complete citation (author, title, journal/book, volume, issue, pages, year) for the item you're requesting.
  • In-Person: Come to the library and fill-out an ILL/photocopy request form, which is available at the Circulation Desk.

If you're not certain whether it's an ILL or photocopy that you need, simply submit your request, and library staff will determine whether the item is owned in-house or must be borrowed from another library. All ILLs and photocopies can be picked-up at the library's Circulation Desk, or mailed directly to your departmental or home address.

Interlibrary Loan service
The Library Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department provides loans of books, book chapters, journal articles and other materials not owned by the Alumni Medical Library. The base fee for an ILL is $3 per item ordered. Payment methods include cash, check, grant or departmental account number. ILL's usually take 5-10 working days to arrive. A rush fax service is available for a charge of $15. Rush fax requests are available Monday - Friday only. Interlibrary loans are available to faculty, staff and students of the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Public Health and the Boston Medical Center only. All ILL requests can be submitted in-person, by fax or on the Web.

Document Delivery Suppliers
Another option for receiving materials not owned by the Alumni Medical Library is to order articles directly from commercial document delivery suppliers. Document delivery suppliers usually charge between $10-$18 per item ordered. Most requests are received within 24-36 hours. Simply choose a supplier, and phone, fax or email your request, along with your credit card number. Some suppliers offer materials on a one-time basis, while others require that you set-up an account. Click on this link to read more about document delivery suppliers.

Photocopy Service
A photocopy service is also available at the Medical Library. Library staff will produce photocopies of journal articles or book chapters owned by the library. This service costs $.20 per page photocopied, and is available to Boston University Medical Center faculty, staff and students. Payment methods include cash, check, grant or departmental account number. Each request takes approximately 3 - 5 working days to complete. All photocopy requests can be submitted in-person, by fax or on the Web.
